Towing Commander into hangar after a long time.
Had to move a lot of stuff around to fit her, and as you can see, still a very tight fit. But we made it in!

Came to fly her out only to face a leaky fuel drain. Sigh. Aircraft ownership always fun!
Ferry flight Hillsboro to Los Angeles
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 года назад
Finished the ferry flight back to home base. No malfunctions and the weather was good all the way. A little bit of overcast at the end we had to get under by extending East, but no big deal. Felt great to be back in the air. I hope it won't take as long again.

The Commander chronicles finally continue. Here I prep her for her long awaited ferry flight back to SoCal. Nice to be in the air again!
Trip in P180 Avanti.
Просмотров 44 тыс.4 года назад
Took a trip in my friend's P180 Avanti I that he recently upgraded with a brand new Garmin glass panel. Took off from HHR and headed for Denver. Pay extra attention to the fuel flows, speeds and economy of this thing - it's a marvel. Beautiful flight at mainly FL370. An absolute dream machine for me personally and my bucket list plane.
How I almost sold the plane....

It's not always easy to make the puzzle of life's commitments and have financials align with aircraft ownership (or even flying in general). It's an expensive hobby and every pilot will one day face the question if he/she can continue to do it. This year I had to face those questions myself. I've always tried to be transparent on this channel with the costs involved and it was touch and go for ...

Here I ramble on more about the TPE331. Oil changes and some costs associated with that, size of engine etc.
Trip LA to Hillsboro, OR.

Took plane up to the service center in Oregon early Dec '18 to get her straightened out. Smooth trip most of the way, some convective weather at the end. Headwind was pretty bad, so low GS of about 205kts. Also couldn't go as high as I wanted due to pressurization leaks.
Why I haven't posted many flying videos the last few years.

Tight fit in hangar!

Space is hard to come by in the LA region, so you make do with what you get! You can see how extremely tight it is to fit the old Turbo Commander in this T-hangar.

TPE331 vs PT6 turboprops
Просмотров 54 тыс.5 лет назад
Here I talk a little about the major differences and positives/negatives of the two most popular GA turboprop engines in the world, the TPE331 and the PT6. As a layman, of course. I'm not an engineer.

Anyone have a recommendation lens for D800?
Not being an airplane aficionado, I admit I would always be afraid to fly in a renewed abandoned plane. Unless every single component was replaced. Even things that still look ok can have internal issues. What a shame.
Garrett all the way
OK which engine is cheaper to keep and which gets better hrs per gallon ?
Garrett burns about 20% less fuel and is cheaper to overhaul. Hot sections tend to be a bit more costly, but overall the TPE331 is cheaper.
At the 4:07 mark Straobee says that single engine turboprops did not exist during the early days turbo-prop introduction. Not quite accurate. The Pilatus Porter PC-6 tried some Garrett powerplants (their PC-6/C1 used a TPE 331-1-100 and the PC-6/C2-H2 used a TPE 331-1-110F). First turbo-Porter flew in 1961 powered by a Turbomeca Astazou IIE or IIG. Look up Air America, Inc and Continental operations in Laos in the early 1960s. I know AAm switched from Garrett engines to P&W power very quickly. Not sure if CAS kept the Garretts or not.
We miss you!
-1? converted from what?
I got my PPL way back in the day at HHR. Hardly see any video from there. Most recently our company operated a number of Metros and Merlins, but during the PPL days it was BE-200's and 414's and we once got a WWII into there, but this departure seemed like a new record for clearing the fence. Way back in the early 80's a 727 landed there by mistake, removed interior and affixed JATOS to get it back out and over to LAX. Now I remember where I picked up your channel - it was a PA-60, and then at AC-500 IIRC, or did that become a 690 later?
Nice touch with the ominous sounding music with the less than perfect weather at about 6:20; nice video!
A very good effort. Nice video.
Sad to see you put her up for sale. But can't blame you since it appears you barely got to fly it.
For the engenieers out there or those who know, does the reversal of air cause any kind of energy loss in the air flow? I'm thinking that 180⁰ turn will cause a loss of kinetic energy? Wouldn't that be some kind of drawback in the design? Just wondering.
Anyone know about a vinyl 7" of this?
Axial flow I believe the term is
Love those geared Lycomings!
So they were able to seal up your cabin before you flew home, No?
10 years on, it’s Timeless🫡 Amazing work matey, as I still use the D800 for video work
there are no words to describe how good you must feel having that inside your hanger! once had a '79 P28T (T-Tail) in our hanger, so i can relate completely!! and i also have about 80 hours in a 690A (or maybe it was a B?) model with Dash-10's. Love those airplanes!!
and i was just griping about the stuff belonging to my kids stored in my garage....you win
Congratulations! Glad to see you got her back in the air. :)
The design reminds me to the rockwell comander….
So does this mean you're going to develop a airshow tribute to Bob Hoover and hit the airshow circuit?!??😅
I have a 680V that I'm parting with props and -43A garretts
A great Ted Smith design.
Always wanted a Turbo Commander. Then I started working on airplanes. Now in the back office doing the paperwork. Can’t afford one…. I’ll stick with a 108 Stinson tho. And I can afford my hangar. 😊
Love Stinsons! The Cadillac of the sky!

One of the best Birds ever buit.
Do it yourself and have a AP write it off!
Nowadays it seems that we are regressing rather than progressing. I remember in 1967 my dad bought a slightly used '67 Skyhawk for less than 7k. I was the family pilot at 17 and we flew around the country using avgas that cost less than 50 cents per gallon. Now, enter a whole new political scenario. I recently paid $500 for two "O" rings for two gas caps on my Bonanza. Avgas is over $7.00/gallon and rising. I dreamed of having a Commander one day but my Bonanza just slipped out of reach. We need a miracle, many miracles, and soon to enjoy the American dream again.
My biggest concern with the Aerostar is the hazard of unporting the fuel intake ports in turbulence.
I don’t fly but this aircraft has always been one of my favorites. It’s great looking and great performing.
Good job glad to see her back 🌊
Awesome Aircraft! Thanks for Sharing this Video with all watching.
Great airplane!
Twin commanders galore
Congrats , glad to see yu ready to fly
Hmmmm, ever checked into the cost of a 331 overhaul X 2 ??? You might find out why it’s been sitting.
I use the JET A1 in my tractors :) so next time you dump fuel from an aircraft just add some oil and use it in agricultural machinery ;)

California still sells avgas?
The company mark up on on aircraft parts is criminal and ruining aviation for everyone but millionaires!
What tuff aircraft. You are a fortunate feller!
You all know how to make a small fortune in aviation.
Yes, start with a larger fortune, lol
Great to see you back in the air. I've missed your videos.
Did you happen to fly into willows airport on Saturday morning? If you did… I saw you!! I was actually excited to see an old bird like that!!!
That tag is a DEA tag
Beautiful, my Grandfather flew Aero Comanders of every configuration even Jet Comanders. He worked for a Commander dealer out of Linden NJ among many other jobs during his 60 plus years in Aviation.
He was also friends with the great Bob Hover, that man didn't fly that Comander, he wore it. Lol
Cool video. I would’ve loved to have seen the engine start up and takeoff but excellent video Nonetheless. congratulations!
When I was flight instructing, I would occasionally have students that would make large radius turns from base to final. In the post flight, I would tell them what I had read about how the Spitfire was landed: The Spitfire Curved Approach SCA. Which was warranted by the long nose and low pilot eye point in a Spitfire. But for most general aviation airplanes, no such technique is required. Further, the key to reliable landings under good control is an adequately long final approach that is stabilized and on speed. Of course your experience is much greater than my students and this clearly was a safe approach and landing. But it reminds me of the old adage that a superior pilot uses his superior judgment to avoid having to use his superior skills. All the best and love your videos.
Congratulations sir.
